Your mutual fund KYC status decides whether a SIP goes through, whether you can invest with a new fund house, and sometimes whether you can redeem at all. Here is what Validated, Registered, On Hold and Rejected mean on a KRA record, and the exact steps to fix each one.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for KYC status to change from On Hold to Validated?

Once you complete the fix, KRAs must verify records within two days of receiving them. Registrars then update your folios, so allow two to three working days in total before re-checking. If the status has not moved after a week, ask the intermediary that submitted the change for the KRA acknowledgement, then contact that KRA's helpdesk with your PAN.

Can I invest in a new mutual fund if my KYC is Registered?

Yes, but the new fund house will ask you to submit KYC documents again, because a Registered record is not portable. Existing fund houses where you already hold folios will continue to accept investments. To avoid repeating paperwork, complete an Aadhaar-based re-KYC once; your status should move to Validated, which works with every intermediary.

Is KYC status the same for mutual funds and demat accounts?

Yes. KRA records are shared across SEBI-registered intermediaries, so the same status applies to fund houses, brokers and depository participants. A demat account can still be blocked for broker-specific reasons, such as missing income proof for derivatives or an inactive account, so check with your broker if trading is blocked while your KRA status looks fine.

My KYC is Validated but one AMC says it is on hold. Why?

The AMC's folio may carry older data, or the registrar may not have received the latest KRA feed. Check the KYC status shown for that folio in your CAS, then ask the AMC or registrar to refresh it from the KRA. A different PAN, name spelling or missing joint-holder KYC on that folio can also cause the mismatch.

Do I need to redo KYC if I change my address or mobile number?

You need to update it, not redo it from scratch. Submit a KYC modification with the new details through any AMC, registrar, distributor or broker; the KRA updates the central record and every intermediary receives it. Change of mobile or email also triggers fresh OTP validation, so complete those messages promptly.

Can I check KYC status without a PAN?

Some investors, such as certain Sikkim residents, are PAN-exempt and get a PAN-exempt KYC reference number (PEKRN). For everyone else, PAN is the key to the KYC record, and KRA status searches work only with a PAN. If you have lost your PAN card, you can retrieve the number from the income tax e-filing portal.

Will an On Hold KYC affect my nominee's claim?

The nominee or legal heir completes their own KYC to receive the units, so your status does not block transmission. But outdated contact details and an inactive record make it harder for your family to find folios at all. Keeping your KYC Validated is one of the simplest estate-planning steps.

KYC stuck on hold and SIPs failing?

We can check your KRA record, raise the modification and confirm every folio is updated, so your SIPs restart cleanly. Talk to Money n Wealth for a free portfolio review.
